Leddy Center History

Leddy Center produced its first show in July of 1975 as the Epping Community Church Players, in order to raise money to buy the oil needed for the church to hold their services in the sanctuary instead of in the basement of the church.  Elaine Gatchell was the choir director of the Epping Community Church then (and now) and continued to produce and direct one show each year to raise money not only for the church but for many organizations within the town such as the Ambulance Fund, and the Epping Fire Department.

The theater group also was the largest contributor in the state of New Hampshire to Heifer Project International, a non-profit organization that sends animals to hungry people all over the world where they reproduce and their owners share the offspring with neighbors.  The name of the players changed when the group was gifted the permanent use of the second floor in the old Leddy Brothers building in 1984, and began expanding its offerings to include more productions, a concert series, classes and private lessons in the arts, as well as bringing arts assembly programs to schools in the greater area.  The first production in the new space was “My Fair Lady”, held in July of 1985.

By 2008, Leddy Center was embarking on its 34th year producing quality shows and concerts in southeastern New Hampshire! It was early in 2008 that news regarding the sale of its Theatre facility arrived.

Opportunity came to be when a large, modern theatre facility became available just 1 mile away. The new Leddy Center (at Ladd's Lane) was established in time to close out our final two events of 2008!

Where in the world are you?

EPPING, NH

Epping, New Hampshire, is located at one of the busiest intersections in New Hampshire - the intersection of Route 101 (which runs east to west from Hampton Beach on the Atlantic Ocean to the western-most part of our fair state) and Route 125 (which runs north to south from Rochester to Plaistow and on into Haverhill, MA and beyond).  Epping, a small town of 6,000 residents, is jokingly called "the center of the universe" - but there is a very good reason for that title!  Epping used to be a booming town, and was serviced by trains running from the north, south, east, AND west.  The downtown area, a half-mile from where we are located, featured fine jewelry and fur stores in addition to the Leddy Brothers mercantile which was once our lobby and theater.
